The course aims to familiarise the students with the main problems related to the operatic "language" and its development through the centuries. The biographical and stylistic profiles of the following composers will be studied: Monteverdi, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, Leoncavallo. For each composer studied, the most significant aspects will be underlined e.g. the musical education, the relationships with the contemporary cultural and political world, the stylistic development, etc. The course includes the historical musical and dramaturgical analysis of parts of the following Operas:  - Monteverdi:
